Guide For 4 Days in London
Introduction
London is one of the most historic and iconic cities in the world. It’s also one of my favorites! When I first visited London at age 14, I was instantly smitten by its beauty and charm. And it has only grown on me since then—to the point where my husband and I are planning a trip back to London this summer with our toddler son. While there are many things that make London such an amazing city (history, art, culture), what really sets it apart is how easy it is to get around. From buses to trains to taxis, getting around town is simple no matter where you are headed or what time of day it is—and there’s always something interesting happening somewhere nearby (especially when you have kids!). So if you’re thinking about visiting London and want some tips on what attractions not miss while there with your family (or if you’re already booked but want more ideas on how best spend your time), here’s everything we recommend doing during our stay over four days:
Day 1
- Visit the Tower of London
The Tower of London was once a royal residence, prison and execution site for many famous people (including Anne Boleyn). Today it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. There are guided tours available that take you through some areas not open to the general public, such as Traitor’s Gate and Wakefield Tower; however, we recommend visiting during daylight hours so you can see everything without having to rush through your visit!
- Visit Tate Modern Museum
Tate Modern is located in Southwark near Bankside tube station on the Jubilee line or Blackfriars tube station on the Circle/District lines – it’s also just across from St Paul’s Cathedral if you want to combine this with another stop on your itinerary! This museum features contemporary art exhibits by famous artists such as Monet and Picasso along with lesser known ones like Sophie Calle who has been described as “the most original artist alive today” by Time Magazine.”
Day 2
Day 2:
- The British Museum is a great place to spend the day, and it’s free! If you have time, head over there in the morning before heading out on your first adventure of the day.
- There are several ways you can get around London–by foot, by bus or train–but we recommend grabbing an Uber if it’s your first time in London. It’s pretty inexpensive and easy to use! You can even use it while abroad if you download their app ahead of time (here’s how).
- If you want something affordable but still close enough for convenience purposes, we’d recommend staying at this hotel called Travelodge near Waterloo Station. They offer rooms starting at only $40 per night!
Day 3
Day 3 is a busy one. You’ll want to get up early and head out for a walk around London, so you can take in some of the sights before hitting up some museums and other attractions.
The first stop on your itinerary should be Tower Bridge, which offers great views of both the Thames and Tower Hamlets. If possible, take time for a stroll along its pedestrian walkway (or “highwalk”). Then head toward St Paul’s Cathedral where you can climb up into one of its towers for even better views of London–and make sure not to miss St Paul’s itself while you’re there!
Afterward, visit Tate Modern museum; it houses works by Picasso as well as modern artworks from Damien Hirst and Anish Kapoor among others–all displayed in an architectural landmark that was formerly used as East London Power Station. Afterward continue south along Southwark Street until reaching Borough Market where there are plenty of options available such as coffee shops or restaurants serving traditional English food such as fish & chips but also international cuisine such as Indian curries too!
Day 4
- Visit the Tower of London and see the Crown Jewels (free)
- Spend some time at the British Museum, where you can explore historical items from around the world (free)
- Walk through St Paul’s Cathedral and admire its breathtaking architecture (free)
- Make your way over to Westminster Abbey, where many famous people have been married or buried–and even watch a wedding if you get there early enough! ($20 entry fee)
- Visit National Gallery or Tate Modern for some great art exhibitions ($20-25 entry fee per museum)
